World’s Finest (1941) 30

It seems like a no brainer now, but to be honest, it didn’t dawn on me when I first posted Lucky Penny Day way back in 2021.

No, the most famous penny in comic book history has to be the one Batman has so proudly displayed in his Batcave. The one he acquired in World’s Finest (1941) issue 30 during the infamous

Penny Plunderers case.

Simply put, Batman must stop stop Joe Coyne from his crime wave of penny pilfering. Which Gotham’s Guardian did with the help of the oversized coinage.

Over the years Batman has adorned the Batcave, originally introduced in the original Batman 1943 serial’s second chapter The Bat’s Cave, with trophies from his many adventures. Some of the more famous include the giant T-Rex, Bruce’s father’s Bat-Man costume that inspired his later fashion and Jason Todd’s Robin costume.

The penny hit American pocketbooks in the late 1700’s – 1787 to be exact. It wouldn’t be “official” until 1792 through the Coinage Act of 1792. The penny’s value would be 100th of a dollar. The US Mint was formed by Congress that same year.

President Abraham Lincoln would be the first public official to be featured on American coinage. His likeness on the penny coincided with his 100th birthday in 1909. The Lincoln Memorial was added to the “tail” side of the coin in observance of Lincoln’s sesquicentennial birthday. His bicentennial was celebrated with four different versions of the penny.

Over time the material to manufacture the coin has outpaced its value. The Mint has announced it will discontinue the penny this year.

Time will tell if Lucky Penny Day will continue.
